A 27 year old gentleman in the Cramlington area is looking for a team of carers to support him to remain independent within his home and social life. The gentleman suffers from spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) Type II, which severely restricts his mobility and confines him to an electric wheelchair.
SMA is a disease that progressively destroys the nerve cells in the brain stem and spinal cord that control essential skeletal muscle activity. In general, over time this condition can significantly affect an individual’s ability to carry out basic everyday activities such as walking, breathing, and swallowing, leading to increasing muscle weakness and atrophy. As such, the gentleman requires significant care support to enable him to enjoy as independent a life as possible.
A valid, clean driving licence is preferred . A mobility vehicle will be available when supporting client to access community

Hours of work:
33 ¾ hours waking per week and 70 hours waking nights (7 nights x 10 hours per night) to be shared with amongst a team of carers.

Breakdown (subject to change. Flexibility will be required to allow the client to maintain a full and varied work and social life):
Daily
- AM – 1 ½ hours to support with morning routine, personal care, breakfast
- Morning – ½ hour to support with morning exercises
- Lunch – ¾ hour support with lunch, personal care (employee will be required to attend client work place)
- Tea – 1 hour to prepare meal and tidy
- Evening – bedtime routine including personal care
- Overnight – 10 hours per waking night support will be required throughout the night
- 4 hours per week enabling to access community, shopping and socialising
Rates of Pay: £10.82 per hour
Location: Cramlington area
Main Duties:
- Morning – supporting with all transfers between bed and bathroom, personal care support required including dressing. Preparing and supporting with breakfast, clearing up and ensuring client is prepared for work
- Lunch – Post Covid the successful applicant will need to attend client’s office in Newcastle to support with personal care and lunch.
- Evening – supporting with meal preparation, feeding and clearing away e.g dishes. Personal care as and when required and supporting with bedtime routine.
- Overnight – the gentleman requires support overnight with repositioning using a slide sheet, training will be provided, personal care and the client is currently trialling a home ventilator and successful candidate will be required to support with mask positioning, adjustments as instructed, again full training will be provided. Laundry support will also be required late evening, early morning.

Further Information: An Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service Certificate (DBS) will have to be obtained for the successful candidate (at employer’s expense).
Training: Where it is required, such as in Health and Safety matters, practical training and guidance will be arranged and the care worker will be expected to attend. This will include moving and handling, medication awareness and additional training specific to the client.
