Care Assistant Required in the Newton Aycliffe area to support a young man with autism, to support him in a transition to his own home, building independent living skills and social skills.

Up to 20 hours per week , wage rate £9.50 per hour

Main duties and responsibility:

Take personal responsibility for learning about people with autism and how it affects them, for listening and for reflecting on own practice to continuously develop your own knowledge and skills 

Specifically take account of choices, needs and wishes of the client in their own plans and day to day decisions

Maintain the client confidentially at all time

Develop person centered working relationship with the client

Support the client in the daily lives through:

Assisting to develop and maintain a high standard of personal hygiene and appearance

Supporting them to make appropriate choices regarding their nutritional needs

Accompanying them to appointments as appropriate

Reporting to line manager any concerns regarding the client's welfare including health and safety issues.

Supporting the client on basic care needs and assisting them to learn self care with appropriate direct support when required 

Actively encouraging and supporting leisure and meaningful activity both inside and outside the home, in according with the client's interest, choice and needs.

Accompanying them on trips away while available and appropriate

Ensure the home environment is secure, clean and well presented, utilizing domestic chore? and relevant checks, as necessary.

Using "positive intervention support planning" to support the client in managing their own behaviour

Record keeping and reporting as required.

Attending and participating in all meetings as required.

Working with line manager to identify needs and access relent training learning and development opportunities. 

Person spec for personal assistant:

Knowledge

Essential:

Experience working with vulnerable people

Understanding of what " a person central approach" means

 Desirable:

Experience working with individuals with autism spectrum disorder particularly those with Asperger syndrome / high functioning autism

A sound theoretical knowledge of autism spectrum disorder and  knowledge of how to put that in practice

Relevant qualification e.g. NVQ level 2/3 / OCF level 2/3 health and safety care

 
Skills / Ability

Essential:

Awareness of autism spectrum disorder and how they may affect individual

Ability to work on own initiation and " think for yourself"

Flexibility and resistance: the ability to meet the change need of clients

Excellent communication skills, particularly recognising the importance of listening

Willingness to learn and continually develop.

 Desirable:

A full clean driving license

Interest in science

 Other:

A dedication and passion for working with people with ASC and a desire to help the client achieve his true potential.

Empathy, non judgmental, attention to detail, maintaining professionalism, resourcefulness, flexibility, motivation to learn and to improve personal skills.

 General:

Non smoking working environment, enjoy walking and dogs and reading.

An enhanced DBS is essential
