Are you interested in supporting a young person in the home and with accessing the community? Can you spare 4 hours a week to support a young person with building their independence skills? (This will mainly be weekend days which can be mutually flexible with prior notice).

L is a quiet, kind and thoughtful 16 year old with a great imagination. He has a variety of interests including outdoor activities, gardening, computing, BMX biking and crafts. Supporting L will enable him to build his confidence, social skills and independence out of his home.

L has a diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome and as such struggles with communication and understanding social norms. L on occasion will display demand avoidant tendencies when anxious or stressed and can sometimes struggle with direct instruction, time and money.

One of the key roles of the PA would be to support L to grow in confidence when interacting with members of the public and peers. L’s PA needs to be happy to spend time outdoors in all weathers and keep up with L’s energy levels. They should be confident in their ability to step back and spot signs that L’s arousal levels are increasing, and support L to use strategies that help him feel calmer.

The ideal candidate should be compassionate, reliable, conscientious, calm and patient. They should be friendly and approachable, sensitive, flexible and fun!

What are the duties?

·       Support in accessing the community for fun activities including museum and cinema trips, being in nature and biking.

·       Spending down-time at home doing independent tasks such as gardening, crafts or making art.

·       Support to access interests and hobbies

·       Supporting the learning of new skills

 Essential Requirements:

·       An understanding and previous experience with ASC (Autism Spectrum Condition) and de-escalation techniques is desirable but not essential

·       Flexibility towards planned activities

·       Patience and tolerance to L’s interests

·       Full clean driving licence and vehicle desirable but not essential (mileage reimbursed)

Any relevant experience will be considered if the skills can be applied to this role.
