Personal Care Assistant

I’m a young man in his 40s with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy who has complex care needs due to severe muscle weakness. I breathe through a tracheostomy and require the use of a ventilator 24/7. I also have very limited mobility and am confined to an electric wheelchair, requiring full assistance for everything. I require 24-hour care by a team of Personal Care Assistants who work on a 2-to-1 basis to support me. I live independently at home with my mum.

This is an exciting opportunity for a friendly, reliable and trustworthy person who is passionate about care work to join a team of Personal Care Assistants, to assist and support me in all aspects of my daily life. I’m looking for someone caring and understanding, who is not afraid to take on the huge commitment and responsibility of helping to maintain my health and well-being (both physical and mental). The ideal candidate is someone who will be able to build a good bond with me and support me to achieve everything that I want to in my life. Typical duties will include helping me daily with personal care, medical, admin, domestic and social support tasks, to enable me to live as independently as possible. Training will be provided where required.

This is not a typical care job. Although you are always expected to be professional, you will be working in an informal, relaxed home environment which can be fun and have rewarding social aspects to it. I like exploring new places and meeting new people and am quite keen on trying new things such as going to concerts, festivals, etc. I also really enjoy watching tv and movies (especially Marvel), listening to a wide range of music, playing computer games and reading. I’m a huge Formula 1 fan too and make use of a lot of technology and gadgets, therefore you must be proficient and confident in using and setting up this technology e.g. laptops, tablets, games consoles, sky tv, etc. and be comfortable supporting me to access it. You will support me to find, plan and organise new activities and hobbies and be expected to accompany me whenever I go out for day trips, holidays, or social activities, such as shopping, visits to the cinema, hospital appointments, etc.

No previous care experience is required but always welcome, as extensive training will be provided to enable you to safely and competently carry out all the duties of this role. If you are successful, you will receive a full job description and person specification detailing all the tasks that you will be expected to help me with and the personal qualities and skills you must possess to succeed at this job.

Shifts will typically start at 8.00am and finish at 8.00pm but can vary occasionally depending on what I am doing in a given week. Pay is £11.50 per hour for day shifts. You must be willing to work weekends and holiday periods such as Christmas.

You must be eligible to work in the UK, be willing to undergo an Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check and provide references. Interviews will be carried out online via video messaging. Successful applicants will be entitled to Holiday pay and will be issued employment contracts. A valid UK driving license is essential.
