Purpose of the job:
We are seeking a confident and outgoing PA to provide 1-1 support to our teenage son who is autistic and non verbal. He uses a visual timetable and the PA would be expected to be able to use this way of communicating. Previous experience with Makaton and other non-verbal communication techniques are essential for this role.
Whilst working with H you will need to be quick thinking and happy to get stuck-in. Due to his stature and strength he can become challenging therefore we would like the support worker to either have knowledge or experience of autism. The PA will also need to prompt and assist with personal care, as required.
The PA will support and encourage H to develop their independence skills. Initially you would work in the home but ultimately develop his sense of independence in the community attending clubs etc.
Experience working with children with learning disabilities is essential for this role, preferably within a school setting. Managing challenging behaviour and implementing consistency is key to the PAs success.
Hours of work:
The hours are usually on a weekend but you would if possible be asked to attend appointments advance notice would be given.
Supervision:
My personal assistant will be directed by and accountable to me in all aspects of their work. They will always ask what is required and not make assumptions about any aspect of the assistance I need or how it should be carried out.
The role is subject to a 3 month probationary period during which you will be closely supervised.
Pre-employment Checks:
Prior to starting work you will be subject of an Enhanced DBS and reference checks. You may also be asked to provide evidence of your right to work in the UK.
