Job Title: Personal Assistant

Hours Per Week: 5 hours, per week on a weekend (flexible)

Hourly rate: £11.74 at all times

Location: at home in LS13 and in the local community

Probationary Period
: 3 months

Purpose of the job:

To support a young lady who is blind and has autism in the home and community who has the condition septo-optic dysplasia.

The personal assistant will work on a 1.1 basis in the home or when out in the community. The young lady likes to go out for a meal but can use her fingers only to eat. She will need help if food needs cutting up.

The personal assistant needs to be confident and motivated in order that the young lady uses the time with her personal assistants to engage in activities. The PA will need to be willing to act under the direction of the young lady’s mother. You will also be expected to plan activities along with her mother.

Her behaviour can be challenging as she has no verbal skills. Her mother is very supportive and will acknowledge that the worker will need time to build a rapport with her daughter and will not initially be left alone with her. The client uses sign language in a limited way and enjoys swimming visiting the park and bowling. She also enjoys sand play and loves having a bath but needs close supervision. She also has a basket swing in the garden which she thoroughly enjoys being pushed in.

Personal care i.e. bathing and changing, will be part of the job but only when the employee has built a rapport with her. The PA would also be required to administer medication.

Experience as a PA is desired but additional training will be provided, particularly in moving and handling. We would be particularly interested in any candidates with experience with intensive interaction and working with partially sighted people. 

Time keeping is particularly important and also if you are taking holidays it is paramount you give the agreed notice. Also if you are expected to arrive late please let her mother know as soon as possible.


We are looking for an enthusiastic person with some experience of working with young people with autism and associated learning difficulties. The PA must have patience and understanding of the requirements that a person with autism has. 

You must be confident in taking her out and especially be alert to dangers that you may encounter. You will be able to draw on your experience of working with people with disabilities to find ways to engage, reassure and calm her whilst also having fun. You will be confident about managing my daughter’s personal care, where appropriate.

Main Duties:
- Take care of her personal needs.
- Encourage client to make healthy choices with food and exercise.
- Prepare meals.
- Give prescribed medication, as directed.
- Be patient with the client.
- Be creative, participate, and encourage activities.
- Undertake relevant training.
- Respect the young lady’s privacy and that of her family.
- Respect the young lady’s home.
- Source information about groups to enhance her life.
- Provide a safe environment.
- Be reliable.

Additional Information:

- A full UK driving licence.
- You will be expected not to use your mobile phone whilst working unless in an emergency.
- You will receive a contract of employment and the first three months will be a probationary period therefore if during this time either party is unhappy the employment can be terminated.
- You will be given 5.6 annual leave pro-rata and will be paid statutory sick pay.
- Confidentiality is of paramount importance at all times.
- If you are provided with any keys etc. when you leave my employment you will need to return these.
