Personal Assistants required to support a woman in Seaham, County Durham. I am an electric wheelchair user who has mental health conditions and Specific Learning Difficulties.

Purpose of Job.

I live independently and require assistance to enable my independence to have a healthy and active quality of life. As my Personal Assistant, it is important that you respect my role as your employer and are able and willing to work under my direction. 

Your job will be providing the physical and mental health assistance I need to enable me to be as fully independent as possible. 

As my Personal Assistant you must be extremely reliable and be able to work flexible hours.

You must be willing to learn about your role as my Personal Assistant while respecting my privacy and dignity. It is imperative that you maintain confidentiality at all times, in all areas of your work.

I will require support to access social and leisure activities, assistance with personal care tasks, mobility and paperwork.

The job is best suited to those who are confident working on their own, interacting with myself and others as required. 

HOURS

42.5 hours per week, plus additional hours for regular medical appointments, as required. These hours will be covered by two Personal Assistants (hours negotiable). 

Hours averaging between 25-40 per week are also required, to fulfil Personal Health Budget. Further details available on request.  

One additional Personal Assistant is required to cover annual leave, any sickness and ad hoc hours. Further details available.

DUTIES

As my Personal Assistant you will be directed by and be accountable to me in all aspects of your work. You should ask what my needs are and listen to my directions and requests. Personnel issues will be negotiated through me.

It is important to remember that to live the most autonomous life possible, my needs will vary therefore it is important that you are flexible about what the task involves and agrees to undertake other reasonable personal assistance that I require.  I truly value that my Personal Assistant enable me to live my life as I wish.

You will assist me with safely accessing/exiting shower and dressing.

Preparing meals based on my choice of foods. Healthy eating and nutrition are an important aspect of this role.

A variety of domestic duties including, washing and general housework.

Assistance with shopping.

Assistance with paperwork, emails etc.

You will be required to drive my adapted Motability vehicle.

You will assist me getting in and out of the vehicle.

We will go to places of my choice including outside local area.

Assistance to attend medical appointments.

Assist me with a variety of activities.
DRIVING
As my main mode of transport, my car allows me to access various activities as well complete household chores. It is essential that my Personal Assistants are comfortable driving my large wheelchair accessible vehicle. 

Nervousness or apprehension can have a detrimental effect on the performance of the driver and therefore would make it difficult for this part of the role to be successfully fulfilled.

A manual driving licence with a 5-year driving history is therefore required.

Relevant training to secure wheelchair will be provided.

TRAINING

There are no formal qualifications needed to do this job. The majority of the tasks and assistance involved, can be learned by the Personal Assistant and I working together as I am the person best qualified to know what my needs are and how they are best met.

Where it is required, such as in Health and Safety matters, practical training and guidance will be arranged and the Personal Assistant will be expected to attend.

5. Be self-motivated and have the ability to take a proactive role when required.

6. Have a sense of humour and a mature attitude to your work

7. I spend a lot of my time in the company of my assistants; therefore, it is vital you are able to maintain a cheerful demeanour, even when tired or fed up.
