To support a young teenage boy with all daily living tasks, with the aim of developing his social skills and independence.

Details
 
We are looking for two Personal Assistants to support our 15-year old son with all daily living tasks and to help develop his overall confidence and independence with the aim of him attending college next September. Our son needs support with all aspects of daily living, including personal care and support with home-schooling.
 
J has had a late diagnosis of Autism, ADHD, Dyspraxia and can occasionally suffer with anxiety. J has also suffered a brain injury, which can affect him on a day-to-day basis in terms of experiencing pain, fatigue, headaches and frustration as a result of these symptoms. He can occasionally present with some challenging behaviours associated with these needs.
 
Our son’s interests include crafting, Dr Who, WWE, Gaming, visiting historic places, football, trampolining. J would also like to start to attend a gym in the future, and the ideal candidate will be intuitive in identifying other opportunities for J to develop new experiences and interests.
 
Duties to include:
 
·      Support with personal care and managing toileting needs.
·      Support to help our son develop and learn independence skills by getting him out in the community and giving him opportunities to develop social skills. J particularly needs support with understanding social cues and what is and isn’t appropriate in different social situations.
·      Promoting positive habits, routines and structure within J’s day.
·      Encouraging J to communicate and make his thoughts and needs known.
·      Developing J’s self-confidence by helping him access the community, socialise and engage in recreational activities.
·      Support to attend appointments.
·      Administering medication once appropriate training has been provided.
·      Our son is being educated in the home and you will be expected to support with this learning to help maintain a consistent educational routine.
·      Support with organising recreational activities and days out.
·      Record keeping and filling in daily logs of care provided as requested.
·      Undergoing any training as is necessary of the role.
·      Any other reasonable duties as requested.
 
Person specification
 
Listed below are the skills, competencies and qualities that are essential and desirable for the post. My assessment of these, both on application and at interview, will be the main factor in determining if you are successful. Please refer to these when submitting your application.
 
·      Experience working with individuals with SEN or Autism, or relevant training essential. Please note, you will be asked to provide certificates or evidence of this as part of the application process. 
·      Driving license holder with own vehicle and appropriate business insurance essential.
·      Genuine enthusiasm for support/companionship roles working with children and young adults.
·      Medication training desirable but not essential as training will be provided.
·      Gentle disposition with a calming voice and presence due to J’s sensory needs.
·      Must be willing to really get to know our son and his needs.
·      Must be comfortable being left on your own with our son while family members have respite.
·      Able to work cohesively with our family and social services to help work towards our son’s developmental goals.
·      Flexible and adaptable.
·      Reliable and trustworthy.
·      Must be comfortable working in a household with 4 cats.
·      Must be available to attend training as is necessary of the role.
·      Must be flexible with increases/decreases in hours available around the school holidays.
·      Must be available for more than one interview as J will be part of the interview process.
·      Must agree to CCTV being in operation in the working environment in communal areas when the family is not in the home. More information on this available on request.
·      Must be comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.
·      Basic IT skills and knowledge of Microsoft Teams desirable.
·      Maths and English at GCSE level (or equivalent) grade C or above essential.
 
Summary terms and conditions
 
·      The rate of pay for this position is £15 per hour. Waking overnight sessions are paid at £20 per hour/£240 per session.
·      You will be reimbursed for any agreed expenses incurred as part of the role.                                            
·      Hours and times of work: 20 hours per week to be split between two carers providing double up care at all times. 20 additional hours per week to be used ad-hoc. 2x 12-hour waking overnight sessions per week (no double up care required). To be discussed further at interview.
 
The post is subject to the following
 
·      A satisfactory enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check, the cost of which will be covered by the employer.
·      Satisfactory references from two referees, one of which must be your current or last employer.
·      Completion of a satisfactory probationary period of 3 months.
